Ronald Reagan was an actor and ended up being a pretty decent president as far as I'm concerned. Wait and see how the man does. the whim has improved a 1,000% since the spring of 98. Keep it up, now your a publication of distiction, the current staff shows true talent and maturity. the graphics are first rate and the articles have real content and imagination. the whim started out string in artistic work but weak in content last year and sank like the titanic in the spring of 98. this years staff has truly reserected a dying pubilcation, GREAT JOB!!!!

In defense of the freshmen, I must remind all of the readers out there that we were all freshmen once. I can very clearly recall thinking that I owned the place. I reminisce about those days, and sometimes even wish I had that arrogance about things. Don't worry. In time, all freshmen realize that they do not know everything. It is part of their learning process in college. It is a big step. Let's cut them a little slack. They already have to deal with people like yourself pre-judging them. Go freshmen!! Rock on!!!!!!!

But things are going pretty good right now, so he is a consciencous objector without a cause. That libertarian who writes for the tartan needs to get his act together. He writes all this crap with not much to back it up. Two issues ago, he wrote how the U.S./U.N. was indirectly killing thousands of Iraqi's with sanctions. All that needs to happen to end them is for Saddam to step down. I see what you are saying, but in this case, we are a public forum. We can be considered a public place. That isn't determined by a particular number. Brian, I am annoyed when people throw around the word "libelous". Your statement, if that was you, that "(an opinion) not based on fact (could be libelous)" is simply not true. You can have an opinion based on whatever misinfirmation you choose to believe, and further, you can express that opinion in anyway you wish as long as you are expressing it as your opinion. Secondly, if the original statement said was in the form of a asserted fact, such as the editor is whiney, then is still not really libelous. That is extremly hard to objectivly define in a court of law. We all have different opinions of what is whiney. However, is the statement had been the editor is fat, he wieghs 500 pounds then, you got you some libel. Unless of course, if the WHIM is seen by enough people to make your editor a public person under difinition of the law. Then, you would have to prove that the a)the statment is false and b) the statment was made with reckless disregard of the truth. In practicality, this is nearly impossable. That is why we see so many tabloids make crazy acusations about celebreties and rarely get sued effectivly. Please please please everyone who reads this, if you are going to accuse anyone of slander or libel, understand what it really is before you do so. Scott Cloud, future first amendment litigator.

hey I agree with that roommate thing. I've been here for four years and I have just now got a roommate that I can live with. The first three were nightmares. I've had to deal with everything from having a hole burned in my rug..to one going out with my ex boyfriend who I was mad at not too long after I broke up with him to having to live with the hall's annoying loud mouth. It's cruel to expect total strangers to live together in a tiny room for a year and get along!

I'm pissed off. Why do we have to have roommates that ruin our lives? I've tried ignoring mine, but she just won't get the freakin' hint that I don't want her in my life anymore. Sure, it was novelty sharing a room for the first time in my life. However, that novelty wore off after 2 weeks. I can't help it if her boyfriend's a jerk. She listens to everyone else say it but blows up at me when I ask if he was nice to her this past weekend. I propose a new way to live. I say that if we pay double the room fe e, we can get a room to ourselves. I'm willing to pay if any of my next roommates turn out like my current one.

I don't know about that Tartan. I tend to agree with that pr tool argument. I know of some stuff that should have been convered but wern't. Eiether the tartan was too lazy to cover these controversal little stories, or felt pressue not to cover them. I al so know that the tartan is also trying to position themselves against the administration by running so-called rousing stories like the LSD one. Come on, do you think they would not run it? That, to me, would seem stupid for the power to be to cover up su ch a public story. What I am concerned about is that all we are getting from thet tartan is just that- a rerun of what is already been exposed by the Roanoke Times and Channel 10. I really wish they had some more guts or perhaps some more smarts.

Okay, I know what I'm about to say will relate to A LOT of people. I HAVE NO FOOD DOLLARS LEFT AND I AM PISSED OFF ABOUT IT. I didn't fork over almost $1000 for a meal plan to have to rummage around for change for the vending machine in the middle of NOVE MBER. And it's not like I got Terrace-shop happy or anything either, it's just that my boyfriend from UVA visited and it cost me A TON of food dollars just for him and I to eat in the crappy cafeteria. If we have to scan the card twice for an out-of-town friend to eat with us, why don't they just take away another meal instead of 6 freakin food dollars (which by the way is equivalent to 12 coffee refills).

I hate attendance policies...If we are adults treat us like adults. If I earn a B in a class I should not be given an F just because I missed to many classes. If the whole purpose of college is to learn so that I can get a degree, then why should I be d enied my true grade which reflects that I did learn the material, just because of some stupid professors rule?

Whoever wrote about the tartan is spreading bullshit lies, and is attempting to brainwash this community. I happen to know for a fact that Tartan staff firmly feel that their publication is NOT a PR tool, nor should it ever be a PR tool. You may have se en this in other administrations, but the current staff does not bend over backwards to preserve the image of RU. This past weekend was an Open house. I watched as DOZENS of prospective students and parents grabbed copies of the Tartan. Of the articles on the front page, TWO would most certainly have been "x"ed out if your theory was correct. Look it up. "LSD abuse" and "DATE RAPE drugs." Look at that and tell me that the Tartan jumps through hoops! Not THIS administration. Not this semester.

The administration in general. Radford University has the worst policies concerning free speech. The public relations and upper administration spin doctors are so worried about RU getting a bad name that they quash a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff that woul d make your heads spin and a lot of stuff that doesn't matter much to anyone. I think we need to make a stand and demand our 1st amendment right to complete unfeddered free speech and press. Folks, if you read the Tartan keep in mind that you are reading official RU propaganda. Don't believe anything that might be important. Most of the sports are not faked though. I have literally seen a vice president stand over the shoulder of the Tartan editor and ok and red line material. Is this the kind of 4th esta te we deserve. I think NoT.
