Taking the lead over entertaining multi-player games on the N64 is still the ultimate party game, Mario Kart 64.
The N64 version of Mario Kart is much enhanced over its Super Nintendo counterpart. The game, in either version, is challenging, addictive, and quite fun. Both can get boring though, if you play alone. This is definitely a game for groups. The N64 version is capable of handling up to four players.
The premise is simple: In "Battle Mode," you drive your character around a 3d world, collecting weapons and setting up traps. Each character on the board has three balloons. The loser of the game is the one who loses his/her balloons first, so it is important to watch your backside! The goal of the game is to collect your weapons, and use them to destroy the other characters on the playing field. Want a tip? Use the heat-seeking turtles from the higher levels. You can shoot those out from the third tier on the blocks level, and blast away characters on the ground level. (gets 'em every time!)
In "Racing Mode," the concept is self-explanatory. You battle your competitors in a high-speed, entertaining setting. Pick up weapons along the way, and blast your way to first place. Beware of booby traps, and watch out for those obstacles that deliberately jump in front of you at the last second!
Although the Mario Kart 64 version is not rumble pack compatible, you will find all the excitement you crave when playing with friends, as this game inspires yelling. :)
With sharp turns, unexpected obstacles, and assortment of weapons, Mario Kart 64 far surpasses its predecessor for the Super Nintendo. If you have the means, I would highly recommend renting or purchasing this one. Its simplicity is the reason that people
keep playing. Give it a try!

Mario Kart 64 is easily one of the best games the Nintendo 64 has come out with yet. I've lost a lot of sleep because of this addicting game. Why is it so addicting? Just read this review and check out the game for yourself. You won't be sorry.
Mario Kart is Nintendo's classic racing game starring many of Nintendo's most famous characters such as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Peach, Wario, Bowser, and Donkey Kong. You can have time trials to get the feel for each course. Race by yourself against eight computer opponents, or against up to three other players.
There are four areas to choose from each containing four race courses. The races aren't just your average go-kart races. Each character picks up weapons throughout the courses. You can fire turtle shells at your opponent that can fire in a straight line, chase the person in front of you, or go after the leader and anyone that gets in the shells way. Each character has three balloons attached to their cart and they lose a balloon each time they are hit. The last person left with at least one balloon is the winner.
The graphics and sound are outstanding and some of the best I've seen on a N64 game yet. The game makes great use of the system's sound capabilities. Each character has some very funny and sometimes annoying sounds they make when they drive by you or fire their weapons. The background music also adds to the fun of the game.
The multi-player options are the best feature in my opinion. The one-player options tend to get old after a while, and the environment seems to act the same each time. For instance, the train in one of the levels always comes in front of the first railroad crossing every time.
It's much more fun to play against a friend, just watch your language, and make sure you don't leave with a controller shoved up your butt.
So if you're looking for a new game to buy for your Nintendo 64, you can't go wrong with Mario Kart 64. It usually sells for about $40. Just remember to get some sleep so you don't wake up and act like a zombie the next morning.
